FAQs
What is a juried exhibit/show?
A juried art exhibit involves an application process, a call for entries, and often requests an application fee. Usually, there is a guiding concept or theme. The jury process is intended to raise the quality of the show; encouraging artists to excel at their craft and push artistic boundaries. Once artists have submitted their applications, the jurors select which artworks they feel best represent the theme or premise of the show. Usually, jurors do not see the names of the artists and cannot invite artists to submit particular works for the show.
Our jurying process: For elemental unravelling, we will be using what’s known as a ‘blind jurying process.’ This means that the names of who submitted the works for consideration will not be shared with the jurors. And, we will also not be sharing the names of those who will be jurying the artworks with members. Selected jurors will be paid an honouraria for their time.
Who will be jurors?
Three collective member who have not submitted work for the exhibition will be jurying the work. Aside from three member jurors, our Program Coordinator, Carol Kajorinne, and Baggage Building manager, Angela Jensen, will be present to asses works based on their suitability to the multi-use public space. All artists involved in the jurying process will be peers - ie. identify as having lived experience.
How do I become a juror?
Closer to the exhibition date, artists interested in being jurors will be invited to submit a brief statement of interest sharing what skills/expertise they have to lend to the jury, and why they would like to be involved. Member artists selected as jurors will show a keen interest in art, will be familiar with a range of artistic disciplines, and will appreciate new, unfamiliar ways of working - sometimes referred to as “outsider,” “brut” or “mad art.”
Is there an application fee?
No. Our aim is to encourage artists who may not otherwise have the means or invitation to participate to submit an application featuring 3 of their favourite works they are most confident, comfortable and excited about sharing.
If my work is selected, do I have to use my name?
Exhibiting artists have the option of using an alias.
Will my work be for sale?
Since Spring of 2020, the Baggage Building Arts Centre is no longer a commercially-run gallery space and the Gift Gallery has closed. Thus, the work will not be for sale and the space may not be open for walk-through traffic, pending Public Health protocols. However, if you wish to indicate a way for a potential buyer to contact you directly for purchase, we could include this information on the info card displayed with your work.
What are CARFAC fees?
The CARFAC Minimum Recommended Fee Schedule is a referencing tool for how to pay artists. It sets the minimum recommended rates for the use of artwork along with certain services that visual artists provide. CARFAC fees have been around since 1968 and are widely recognized in Canada as a national standard, and many arts councils require public galleries to pay artist’s fees as a condition of their funding. And, CARFAC fees can also help artists advocate for getting paid appropriately. For example, did you know that when your work is exhibited and it’s not for sale, you are suppose to be paid? Unless you have signed over the copyright, no one can exhibit or copy your work without your permission.
