Spring 2024 we brought together a few of our community members to form a Fundraising Committee, tasked to help raise money to support our work. With limited funding currently, we decided on an alternative approach to fundraising, rather than throwing money we don’t have into hosting events and trying to engage “donors.” Instead, we are launching Volunteer-Run Workshops, hosted by Collective members and allies!

WHY? Many of you are aware that typically we pay CARFAC rates to facilitators, and this will be our first time working with volunteers. Our Fundraising Committee has brought forward this idea, as a way to foster a connected community of inspired artists during a time when we have minimal programming, AND as an opportunity to raise funds.
WHO? Anyone in the community (age 18+) will be invited to participate in the workshops. Drop-in participants will be welcomed, however registration will be encouraged to ensure we have a minimum of 6 participants for each session to run.
COST: Participating is by pay-what-you-can donation, with a suggestion of $20. There is an option to join for free and we are also seeking "pay-it-forward" donations. Participants will be invited to pay anonymously online via our GoFundMe or to drop their donation into the box when attending the in-person workshop.
WHEN? Sessions will be held in June. Artist-facilitators will lead one 1.5-2hr session, rather than hosting a series. If successful, we will determine next steps, with the hopes of continuing with volunteer sessions again in the Fall!
Make a donation.
Since 2018, Mindful Makers has been offering free professional development opportunities, providing much needed support for regional artists and makers who self-identify as having lived experience with mental health conditions and/or addiction. Every contribution has an impact, helping us to sustain accessible and meaningful programming.
Can’t attend a workshop? We invite you to pay-it-forward, supporting someone who may not have the resources to attend!

Paper Filigree
Tuesday, June 25, 1:30-3:30pm
Location: Thunder Bay Public Library, Waverley branch (downstairs)Facilitator: Christine Cherniski
Paper Filigree, also known as quilling, dates back to the 13th century. Circles are formed of paper strips using a tool, and then glued and shaped. The delicate shapes are used in various projects including: greeting cards, pictures and/or frames, boxes, eggs, jewelry, and 3D art. With guidance from Christine, we'll learn some basic shapes together and use them in creating floral greeting cards.
Materials will be provided.
Note: this beginner workshop requires good hand-eye coordination, dexterity and motor skills for using fine tools.
Facilitator Bio: I'm a multi-disciplinary, mixed media artist using art to manage difficulties and as a means of self-discovery, I'm grateful for any opportunity to share disciplines. With the heart of an activist I enjoy learning from others and teaching as a way to share access.
Attendance is by pay-what-you-can donation and registering is required. Suggested amount: $20. You’re welcome to donate in person, when you arrive (cash only), or online via our GoFundMe.
